Biospherian leads Science Festival in Sustainable Living

Flagstaff Festival of Science Celebrates 21 Years

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – She spent two years in a two-acre bubble managing the food supply for eight people and, this fall, original Biospherian Jayne Poynter will share her experiences of extreme sustainable living with Flagstaff. Poynter is scheduled to kick off the 21st Flagstaff Festival of Science, Livin’ Science, Friday, Sept. 24 in Northern Arizona University‘s Ardrey Auditorium.
Her preparation for life inside Biosphere 2 near Tucson involved training to survive in the Australian Outback and onboard a concrete research boat in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. This author, businesswoman and environmentalist currently is developing life support systems for astronauts and Navy deep-sea divers. Poynter will share her life inside Biosphere 2 and her current adventures with Flagstaff residents and visitors.

In addition, the FREE 10-day Festival, Sept. 24 – Oct. 3, will include more than 65 activities for all ages. Presentations will delve into the search for Earth-like planets, the mystery of monstrously big storms and the rugged world of wild animals such as big horn sheep. Guided hikes will explore Sedona’s red rock past, astronaut training grounds and centuries-old archaeological sites. The Arboretum at Flagstaff will be celebrating the beauty of fall, local observatories will be throwing star parties and the Museum of Northern Arizona will be showcasing a living roof. Also, Festival favorites such as Science in the Park, NAU’s Mountain Campus Science and Engineering Day and Flagstaff Medical Center’s Fantastic Voyage will be returning in this 2010 season in science.
“The Flagstaff Festival of Science strives to enrich lives and inspire the next generation of scientists,” said 2010 Festival President William Leibfried. “This annual event shines the spotlight on Flagstaff as a community that values knowledge, exploration and discovery.”

Funding from businesses, organizations and individuals make the Flagstaff Festival of Science possible. The Festival is supported by the City of Flagstaff BBB revenues, Flagstaff Cultural Partners, W. L. Gore & Associates, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Northern Arizona University and the Flagstaff Community Foundation.
